OUR NURSE PRACTITIONER
Due to the increasing calls on primary health care, the role of the General Practice Nurse is changing and becoming more demanding. If, for example, you have asthma, diabetes or problems with a raised blood pressure, you will already be aware that it is our Practice Nurse who looks after you. Over the last few years, several nurses have chosen to undertake a further specific course of study to a degree level. This then enables them to take on some of the traditional roles of a family Doctor.
So - What can a Nurse Practitioner do?
Our Nurse Practitioner, Mrs Jacquie Phare, is able to diagnose and treat patients, arrange investigations and, if appropriate, refer patients to a hospital consultant. A Nurse Practitioner’s responsibilities extend to seeing medical emergencies, minor illnesses, injuries and other conditions besides asthma, diabetes and raised blood pressure. Jacquie is able to do this by offering you telephone or face-to-face advice. She may be able to help your symptoms by treating you immediately and prescribing medication, without you needing to see Dr Hutchinson. If Dr Hutchinson needs to see you, he will then already have some information about your problem including the results of any investigations.
If you ring for an appointment to see Dr Hutchinson, we may also offer you the chance to speak to or consult with our Nurse Practitioner to discuss your medical problem. She can then make the right appointment for you, but you will always still have the option to see Dr Hutchinson.
Jacquie has been our Nurse Practitioner for 11 years now and is available for patients to consult on Mondays. We want to provide a speedier service to our patients and a greater choice of services. Our Nurse Practitioner is a huge help to Dr Hutchinson and supports his commitment to you, his patients.
Practice Nurses: Mrs Lorraine Richardson and Mrs Christine Clarke
Practice Nurses provide an essential service in primary care now, supporting GPs with their promotion and monitoring of patients’ health, particularly for long term disease management. They complement the work of the Nurse Practitioner and Health Care Assistant.
They are responsible for:
- Monitoring the management of chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Asthma, Chest and lung diseases (COPD) and Heart Disease
- Childhood immunisations working closely with the Health Visitor
- Taking smears
- Sexual Health and advice, including condom use and supply
- Managing and offering a Dressings service
- Travel Vaccinations and advice
- Smoking Cessation and Advice
- Obesity and Weight Management
- INR – Warfarin Screening including some phlebotomy
- Spirometry
- Ear Syringing
Lorraine and Christine also carry out some phlebotomy should this be appropriate during a routine appointment but this is mainly the responsibility of Kelly, our Health Care Assistant. Lorraine is available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and Christine on Thursday and Friday mornings. One afternoon a months, Christine is available on a Friday afternoon. Nurse appointments are often booked for longer than the usual 10 minutes to allow full reviews when annual checks are carried out, or when changing a dressing, or offering new advice. If you feel able to discuss your appointment with reception, they will ensure you have the correct time allocated to you.

What is a Health Care Assistant?
Due to the increasing calls on primary health care, the role of the General Practice Nurse is changing and becoming more demanding.
There are several tasks within the Practice that can be performed by a well trained, sensible and caring person under the supervision of the Practice Nurses. Kelly is our Health Care Assistant and has now been with us 4 years.
Such tasks include phlebotomy (taking blood for blood tests), recording ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, testing urine samples, recording height and weight, offering advice on giving up smoking, weight reduction and other health promotion matters, peak flow measurements, spirometry and dressings.
This is a huge asset to the Practice Nurses, to our patients, who will inevitably receive a speedier service, and to Dr Hutchinson. It allows our Nurse Practitioner and Practice Nurse appointments to be better utilised.
Our HCA attends regular training sessions, to increase her competency and help with the development of a confident individual, who is then able to provide a quality and safe service to our patients as part of our Practice Nursing Team.
